Sharpness, Gloucestershire

A seaport that took a wrong turn inland·Gloucestershire·South West England

Sharpness is a seaport about as far inland as a seaport gets, which makes it the only place in Gloucestershire where you can live in the countryside and still get a shipping forecast's worth of tide. The Severn rises and falls the height of a house twice a day, and the village carries on loading ships next to it. Down the bank, a beached barge is a scheduled monument, which tells you how this stretch of river treats boats it has finished with. Buyers come for the estuary light and find a working dock in the view, though the dock was here first and has no plans to apologise.
