Lydney

A coal port that retired into a bypass·Gloucestershire·South West England

Lydney used to ship the Forest of Dean's coal and iron out through its own harbour, and the harbour now holds pleasure boats; that is the town's whole career in one sentence. The Beatles played the Town Hall in 1962, and Lydney has been politely waiting for an encore ever since. Two oil barges knocked down the railway bridge across the Severn in 1960, and the plans to replace it have been coming along nicely ever since. Then in 1995 the A48 got its bypass, so now even the traffic doesn't drop in.
