Coleford, Gloucestershire

The Forest's capital, built over its own mineshafts·Gloucestershire·South West England

Coleford runs the whole Forest of Dean, which in practice means the council offices are here and the train station isn't. In 1968 the town demolished its own town hall to give traffic a loop round a clock tower, and the clock tower is all that's left of a church pulled down for being too small, so the skyline is mostly whatever survived the rows over growth. Its market exists only because a Civil War garrison wanted somewhere to shop that the royalists in Monmouth didn't run, and Coleford has been the practical option two miles from the Welsh border ever since. The railway left too, then came back as a museum, which is the closest Coleford has come to a train in living memory.
