Bream, Gloucestershire

A pit village still standing on its old job·Gloucestershire·South West England

Bream is a ridge-top village in the Forest of Dean with two centuries of history arguing about who's allowed to fence off the trees. Its most famous resident led a riot over exactly that, got a death sentence, was pardoned, and stayed in Tasmania anyway. Locals call that loyalty to the cause, and everyone else can read it as a review. The mines closed generations ago but the workings are still under the gardens, and the rugby club has been running since Victoria was on the throne. It also turned out an international referee, and in a village that likes a scrap this much, that counts as defecting.
