Cinderford

Named after the mess and never denied it·Gloucestershire·South West England

Cinderford is named after heaps of cinders left by ironmaking, which at least spares the estate agents from pretending it was ever a spa town. The ironworks shut, the pits shut, the railway went in 1958 and somebody took the bus station down for good measure, so the forest on the doorstep now has to do all the selling. Its most famous story is a mob killing two performing bears in 1889 that had hurt nobody, after which the town let Ruardean carry the insult for generations. That is better public relations than any brochure has managed for the place since.
