Huntley, Gloucestershire

The post office left, the stocks stayed·Gloucestershire·South West England

Huntley has been where people go when Gloucester costs too much since 1826, when William Cobbett found the city's rooms priced up for the Three Choirs Festival and rode on to the coaching inn here. Two centuries later the deal hasn't changed, except the overflow now arrives with a mortgage and drives back down the A40 every morning. Most of the village went up after the war as bungalows around the pub and the old toll house, so it looks like a retirement plan that got planning permission. It also keeps what are believed to be the Forest of Dean's last surviving village stocks, moved to the recreation ground in the 1970s, presumably for anyone who parks across a bungalow drive.
