Is Huntley, Gloucestershire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Huntley, Gloucestershire.

Yes. Huntley is one of the safer places in the Forest of Dean. Its crime rate is less than half the district's. Over a full year, the total number of crimes recorded there is in the dozens. Unemployment barely registers. The main thing that changes when you move to Huntley is how much you notice when anything happens at all.

Police recorded 36 crimes in Huntley in the year to May 2026. The published rate for that period is about 20 per 1,000 people, roughly 53% below the Forest of Dean average. With so few crimes, the rate is built on a small count, and one bad month on one road can shift it.

The Forest of Dean as a whole recorded about 43 crimes per 1,000 people over the same period, against about 20 per 1,000 in Huntley. Most of the district's crime is recorded somewhere else, and Huntley is not where the number gets made.

Huntley has about 750 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods, unemployment of about 1% and overcrowding of about 1%. It is a village of owner-occupied bungalows and detached houses, with a cricket club and the Red Lion. The worst violence in its recorded history came in 1643, when Royalists took the Parliamentarian garrison, and the following year Parliament took it back. Nothing since has come close.

Catching anyone is a separate question, and it is answered across the whole county. Gloucestershire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 39th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 33% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those outcome figures cover the force's whole area over the year to May 2026 and draw on the eight months it reported. They describe how the police respond across Gloucestershire. They say nothing about how often anything happens in Huntley itself.

Safety is one of Huntley's real strengths, and the low figures here come from the village itself, with little help from the police.
