Gloucester

Once hosted Parliament, now mostly hosts the A40·Gloucestershire·South West England

Gloucester has mattered for the best part of two thousand years, and since 1966 it has mostly been the city people drive round on their way to Wales. The Romans made it a colonia and Richard II held Parliament here. A nine-year-old Henry III was crowned in the Chapter House with a gilded iron ring, which is still the most Gloucester thing that has ever happened. Cheltenham, seven miles up the road, got the reputation, and Gloucester got the cathedral and a rugby crowd who will tell you, without being asked, which of those matters more.
