Cheltenham

Regency manners, racecourse hangover, spies next door·Gloucestershire·South West England

Cheltenham got rich selling mineral water to the gentry and has been dressing for the occasion ever since. It calls itself the most complete Regency town in Britain with the confidence of a place that has never once been asked to show its working. Once a year the racing crowd descends for the Festival, and the locals who spent months complaining about it are somehow all at the course. The rest of the time the town's most famous office is a doughnut full of people who listen for a living, which is why nobody in Montpellier asks too many questions about what you do.
