Is Cheltenham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Cheltenham.

Cheltenham is about as safe as an ordinary English town, which is less than the Regency terraces suggest. Its crime rate is a shade under the borough average. Violence makes up a smaller share of crime than it does nationally. Anti-social behaviour and shoplifting make up more. What Cheltenham's crime record mostly shows is noise and theft from shops.

Police.uk records about 70 crimes per 1,000 residents in Cheltenham in the year to May 2026, about 8,740 crimes in all. That rate is roughly 2% below the average for Cheltenham borough. Both are published figures, and the rate uses its own population base, so it does not come from dividing one by the other.

Side by side, the borough-wide rate is about 72 per 1,000 against Cheltenham's 70. That is close enough to call level, so moving between Cheltenham and the borough's edges changes very little on paper.

The town is dense, with about 5,500 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment is about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. It is a busy, built-up, working town, and those numbers describe its texture without explaining its crime.

The breakdown matters more than the total. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault where nobody is hurt, make up about 30% of recorded crime here against about 35% nationally, a smaller share than usual. Anti-social behaviour is the clearest difference, at about 24% against 16% nationally. Shoplifting is about 11% against 8%. Public order offences, at about 6% against 7%, criminal damage and arson, at about 6% against 7%, and other theft, at about 5% against 7%, are all close to or below the national share. Cheltenham is a regional shopping centre with Cavendish House trading since 1823, and the shoplifters seem to have read the same description.

The mix is a town-wide average, and one busy shopping street can carry much of it. Look up the specific street on the police.uk map and read a full year of months, so one bad month does not decide it for you.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question, and it is answered across the whole county. Gloucestershire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 39th of 42 forces. About 33% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide outcomes, covering only eight months of reporting in the year to May 2026, and they tell you nothing about how much crime a particular Cheltenham street sees. They do tell you not to count on getting a stolen bike back.

Cheltenham's safety is middling. The violent end of the crime count is lighter than the national pattern and the nuisance end is heavier, and the stretch of town where a buyer lives will shape that more than the town-wide figure.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
