What are the schools like in Sharpness, Gloucestershire?

For anyone buying or renting in Sharpness, Gloucestershire.

The schools around Sharpness are good, and the primaries are close by. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. Sharpness has its own primary, and two more are in nearby villages. The nearest secondary is a drive away rather than a walk. The early years are easy here. The teenage years mean a car.

Of the 156 schools in Gloucestershire that Ofsted has graded, 136 were rated good or better, which is nearly nine in ten. Nine of those were rated outstanding. On the other side, 19 were rated requires improvement and one was rated inadequate. Another 95 settings across the county have no published grade yet. That says nothing about how good they are, only that Ofsted has not graded them. All of these figures cover the whole of Gloucestershire, so they describe the county rather than the few schools a Sharpness family would actually use.

Sharpness Primary School is the village's own primary. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times from 2019 put the nearest primary about a ten-minute walk away, or about seven minutes by car. Nearby choices include Berkeley Primary School and Stone with Woodford Church of England Primary School. Gloucestershire County Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so living near a school does not secure a place. A church school can also set admission criteria of its own. If Stone with Woodford is your first choice, read its admissions policy on the county council's website, where it may weigh things other than distance. The prospectus will cover the school; the policy will tell you whether your child can get in.

Secondary school is where Sharpness stops being a short walk. The same 2019 modelling put the nearest secondary about 18 minutes away by car, 37 minutes by public transport, and about an hour and a half on foot. One of the nearby options is a university technical college at Berkeley Green. A nearby secondary has closed recently, so older guides that list it are out of date. Families here rarely worry about which primary to choose. The worry starts once the eldest needs getting to secondary school every day.

The schools are one of Sharpness's real strengths. The primaries are on the doorstep, and the county's grades are strong.
