Abingdon-on-Thames

The county town that lost its county·Oxfordshire·South East England

Abingdon was the county town of Berkshire until it settled for a branch line, and Reading took the crown while Abingdon was still waving at the trains from Radley. It now lives in Oxfordshire, its most famous beer is brewed in Suffolk, and a police station stands where the MG factory used to make sports cars, so everything the town was known for has either moved out or been taken into custody. The old station is a Waitrose. Abingdon has been driving to Didcot to catch a train ever since.
