Who lives in Abingdon-on-Thames?

For anyone buying or renting in Abingdon-on-Thames.

Abingdon-on-Thames is home to about 35,000 people, and most of them own their home and work. About two households in three own. The typical resident is in their early forties. Close to half the adults have a degree. Students hardly register.

The 2021 census is the source for every population figure on this page. About 66% of Abingdon's households own their home. About 18% rent privately and about 16% rent social housing, so renters are split fairly evenly between private landlords and housing providers. Most of the town's renters live in the same places as everyone else.

The median resident is 42, and about 28% of people are aged 25 to 44. That's a town of early middle age. Wikipedia credits the business and science parks with drawing young professionals into estates such as Peachcroft, and many of them seem to have stayed long enough to reach their forties there.

The Office for National Statistics estimates median household income at about £65,500 before tax for the financial year to March 2023, averaged across the seven neighbourhood areas that make up the town. That's a modelled figure for a typical household from a couple of years ago. It isn't a measure for any particular street, and the cost of living has moved since.

About 30% of households are one person living alone. That includes the 12% who are pensioners living alone, so the two figures shouldn't be added together. Couples with dependent children make up about 20% of households, and lone parents about 9%. Abingdon has families, but it isn't only families. Nearly a third of its front doors open onto a household of one.

About 44% of adults have a degree-level qualification, and about 13% have no qualifications at all. Full-time students make up only about 2% of residents. Abingdon is close enough to Oxford to employ its graduates and far enough away not to house its undergraduates.

The people who live here are one of Abingdon's advantages. It's an educated, mostly home-owning town in early middle age, with enough renters, single households and young families that it doesn't feel like a commuter suburb.
