Cholsey
Cholsey is the village Wallingford has to come to when it wants a train, and it has never once let that go to its head. The Vikings camped here in 1006 after setting fire to Wallingford, and that is still the last time anyone turned up for the nightlife. It once had the largest aisled barn in the world, knocked it down in 1815, and now pins its civic pride on a walnut tree on a green called The Forty. Its peak was the thirteenth century, and nobody here seems remotely bothered.
