Chalgrove

A battlefield that went semi-detached·Oxfordshire·South East England

The most famous man connected with Chalgrove was shot in a field outside it in 1643 and took six days to die, which is still the most drama the village has managed. What came after is post-war semis, bungalows bought with the next decade in mind, and a second car on the drive because Oxford is close enough to commute to and too far to want to. The battlefield is the heritage; the cul-de-sac is the lifestyle. John Hampden was only passing through, and he is about the only person who ever left Chalgrove in a hurry.
