What are the schools like in Chalgrove?

For anyone buying or renting in Chalgrove.

The schools around Chalgrove are good, and the county's record backs that up. About nine in ten graded schools in the county are rated good or better. The village has its own primary school, a short walk from most homes. Secondary school is a car journey away. Most families here will find the schools are one of the easier parts of the move.

Ofsted has graded 121 schools across Oxfordshire, and 108 of them are rated good or outstanding, which is close to nine in ten. Eleven are outstanding, 10 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. Another 151 settings have no published grade yet, and that says nothing either way about how good they are. A county where nine in ten graded schools are good or better gives a parent fairly safe odds.

The village has its own primary, Chalgrove Community Primary School. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about ten minutes' walk from a typical home. Several village schools nearby are named on the official register: Stadhampton Primary School and the church schools at Great Milton, Little Milton and Garsington. Oxfordshire County Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so living near any of these schools does not guarantee your child a place there, and church schools can set their own criteria on top. A house that is ten minutes' walk from the school gate can still end up with a place somewhere else.

Secondary school is where Chalgrove's distance from town shows. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 18 minutes away by car, about 51 minutes by public transport and nearly an hour and a half on foot. Bus times like those get worse when services are cut, so the public transport figure is likely to have aged worst. Ask Oxfordshire County Council which secondary school Chalgrove addresses are normally allocated to, and whether a school bus serves it. A child who wants independence at eleven will need either a school bus or a parent with a car.

The schools are one of Chalgrove's real strengths. Primary school is on the doorstep, and the county's grades are strong enough that parents rarely need to worry. The secondary years mean more driving, though.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
