Benson

A royal manor that settled for commuters·Oxfordshire·South East England

Benson was the richest royal manor in Oxfordshire when the Domesday Book was written, and it has been turning down the attention ever since. Offa of Mercia fought a battle to take it off Wessex, which is still the most effort anyone has made to get into Benson. It also lies in a frost pocket that sometimes records the coldest night in the country, and that is the only national record a village can hold without anyone turning up to watch.
