Benson's schools look strong, and the Ofsted picture behind them is reassuring. Nine in ten graded schools in the county are good or better. The village has its own primary a short walk from most homes. The secondary is in the next town, a bus ride away. For families, schools are one of the better reasons to pay what Benson asks.
Ofsted has graded 121 schools across Oxfordshire, and 108 of them, close to nine in ten, are good or outstanding. Eleven are outstanding, ten require improvement and three are inadequate. Another 151 settings in the county have no published grade yet, so they sit outside those numbers entirely. All of this describes the county as a whole, so it tells a parent more about the odds than about any one classroom in the village. The thirteen schools below good are spread across Oxfordshire, and the county total does not say where.
The village primary is Benson Church of England Primary School, the one carrying the village's name and the one most Benson families will look at first. The Department for Transport's 2019 model put the nearest primary about 11 minutes' walk away on average, and about seven minutes by car. Places are handed out under Oxfordshire County Council's published admissions rules, so living close to a school does not on its own secure a place, and church schools can weigh faith criteria as well. Close by are Crowmarsh Gifford Church of England School and St Laurence Church of England School. A parent comparing three church primaries within a few miles will find the school run decided by distance as often as by the prospectus.
Secondary means Wallingford School. The same 2019 model put the nearest secondary about 15 minutes by car, about 44 minutes by public transport and about 75 minutes on foot. That walk is long enough for an eleven-year-old to finish a book and start a feud. Most families plan around the bus or the car, and the ones who don't find out by the second week of Year 7.
Within reach are Moulsford Preparatory School, Cranford School and The Treehouse School, so families looking beyond the state system have options without leaving the area. For the full list, the county's admissions pages and Ofsted's register are the place to look. The one practical check is the oversubscription criteria in the county's latest admissions booklet for Benson Church of England Primary School. A church school's priority order can rank a family three streets away above one next to the gate, and the booklet says which way it falls.
The schools are one of Benson's real strengths. The county's grades are high, the village primary is close, and the only real effort is getting a teenager to Wallingford each morning.
