Berinsfield

An old airbase that never quite got planning permission to be charming·Oxfordshire·South East England

Berinsfield is a disused American airbase that a council turned into a village in 1960, using a ruler and a single architect, and it has never pretended to be anything else. It was named after a local saint, with "field" tacked on because the Americans had called it an airfield, which is about as much ceremony as the planners could spare. Bob Hope and Glenn Miller once took off from here to entertain the troops, and most people since have left by the Oxford road for work. Dorchester, a mile away, gets the abbey and the calendar photographs, and Berinsfield gets the buyers who did the sums and decided they could live without a thatched roof.
