Berinsfield is mostly working families, in a village a council built for families like them. Just over half own their home. More than a third rent from a social landlord. The typical resident is under forty. The village is still doing the job it was built for in the 1960s.
The 2021 census, which is the source for every population figure on this page, counted 2,773 people in 1,088 households. About 55% of households own their home, about 37% rent from a social landlord and only about 8% rent privately. Bullingdon Rural District Council built Berinsfield as a council estate, and social landlords still house more than a third of the village.
The typical resident is 39, and about 26% of people are aged 25 to 44. That is the age of school runs, mortgages and a car that has to be roadworthy by Monday.
The Office for National Statistics models gross household income, before tax, at about £59,000 for the financial year to March 2023. That figure averages a wider area than the village itself. No national comparison is offered here, because a gross figure for a mixed area, measured a few years ago, is easy to misread.
Families are the core of it. About 22% of households are couples with children and about 14% are lone parents. Together those households make up a large share of the village, and they are the reason the village's three-bedroom houses get used as family homes.
The rest is more mixed than the family picture suggests. About 26% of households are one person living alone, and about 13% are a single pensioner living alone, a group included within the one-person total. Many of the people who live alone are older residents, and one in eight households is a pensioner on their own.
At the census, about 20% of adults held a degree and about 26% had no formal qualifications. Only about 1% were full-time students. Oxford is down the road, but very few of its students live in Berinsfield.
Berinsfield is a middling place on the social measures. It is mostly working families in council-built homes and the houses they bought, and it has hardly changed in that.
