Tonbridge

A catchment area that grew a high street·Kent·South East England

Tonbridge is the older town that had to change its own spelling so the post would stop going to Tunbridge Wells, and it has carried the faint air of a sibling made to wear a name badge ever since. People buy here when they wanted the grammar schools and the London trains more than a postcode with Royal in front of it, and most of them will admit that after the second glass. The magistrates here fined Britain's first speeding motorist, a man doing eight miles an hour. Rich, for a town whose whole selling point is how quickly you can leave it.
