East Peckham

Hop country where the river never got the memo·Kent·South East England

East Peckham produced Britain's first speeding conviction, a man doing eight miles an hour chased down by a policeman on a bicycle, and the village has been in no hurry since. The old parish church sits up on the high ground two miles off, which suggests the medieval builders understood the Medway better than some of the people who came later. What's left is a flat bit of hop country that the main road politely goes round, and the river, less politely, doesn't.
