Coxheath

Once an army camp, now Maidstone's spare bedroom·Kent·South East England

Coxheath spent most of its history as the place people went to fight: highwaymen first, then duellists, then a whole Georgian army rehearsing a French invasion that never showed up. It has since become a long line of post-war semis strung along Heath Road, which is what happens when a battlefield takes up commuting. The only thing still under regular attack is the replica Armada beacon, which the wind keeps knocking over and the village keeps putting back up out of pure stubbornness. Duels at dawn gave way to the school run, and nobody on Heath Road thinks that was a downgrade.
