Maidstone

The county town everyone else measures their quiet against·Kent·South East England

Maidstone is the county town that Kent's visitors drive straight past on their way to a cathedral. It turned its biggest brewery into a shopping centre, built the county council offices onto the front of the prison, and still keeps an iguanodon on the coat of arms, which is a fair summary of how the place ranks shopping, paperwork and history. Every village around it describes itself as quieter than Maidstone, and Maidstone has long since stopped taking that personally.
