Hadlow

A hop village with a very tall ego·Kent·South East England

Hadlow is a sensible Medway valley village that a nineteenth-century landowner decided needed a Gothic tower tall enough to be spotted from half of Kent, and nobody since has worked out how to say no to it. Everything else is oast houses, hedges and home offices belonging to people who call a drive to Tonbridge "going into town". The council once had to serve a compulsory purchase order on the folly, which is the kind of paperwork a vanity project attracts when the vanity outlives the family paying for it. Buyers still move in underneath one man's showing off, and the showing off is still the best view in the valley.
