Steyning
Steyning peaked in 1086 and has never got over it. The river silted up, the port died, and the parliamentary seat went rotten. What survives is a high street where everything is listed, a grammar school older than the United States, and the woman who wrote the Gruffalo. Charles Stewart Parnell married his mistress in the parish church in 1891, and it still comes up.
