Upper Beeding

Where two Saxon hamlets pretended to become a village.·West Sussex·South East England

Upper Beeding is what happens when a village decides its whole personality will be that it is not Lower Beeding, which is twelve miles away and not really lower. The parish stretches across the Adur gap and effectively continues as Bramber and Steyning on the far bank, which is either a lovely triangulated community or three villages who have run out of excuses not to admit they are the same place. The locals still call it Beeding, because "Upper" implies there is a competition, and if there is one Beeding was clearly winning it in the thirteenth century. Bring a walking stick, a reasonable tolerance for stone churches, and no expectation that anything much has happened here since the monks left.
