Lancing

The village too big to admit it stopped being one·West Sussex·South East England

Lancing claims the largest undivided village cluster in Britain, which is a heroic way of saying it kept building houses until it forgot to stop calling itself a village. It fills the gap between Worthing and Shoreham like the stretch of road you drive through without ever quite noticing. Up on the Downs sits a boarding school with the biggest chapel in the world, looking down on the old market gardens that quietly turned into housing estates. Nothing has been an emergency here since Beeching closed the railway works, and most people moved here precisely because of that.
