What's the area around Lancing like?

For anyone buying or renting in Lancing.

The area around Lancing is its trump card, the part of the pitch that needs no spin. It sits on a narrow shelf of coast with the sea on one side and the South Downs National Park rising on the other, so open ground is never more than a short walk in either direction. Green space is almost absurdly close to the average front door. There is no shortage of water, farmland, or hill within reach. If you judge a place by what surrounds it rather than what it crams inside, Lancing scores about as high as this stretch of coast gets.

The numbers behind that feeling are genuinely strong. Green space sits, on average, under a couple of hundred metres from home, and there are something like sixteen separate patches of it within a kilometre of the typical address. Water is nearly as close, with the coast and the open ground of the Adur Valley within easy reach and a couple of dozen blue-space spots inside the same short radius. This is not a place where you get in the car to find nature. You step out of the front door straight into it. For anyone on two wheels, roughly a fifth of the area also sits close to the national cycle network.

The wider setting is a chain of coastal settlements rather than a single standalone town. Sompting folds into the western edge and Coombes sits quietly to the north, while larger Shoreham-by-Sea lies to the east and Worthing spreads out to the west, so the everyday range of shops, services, and general variety is broader than Lancing on its own would suggest. Behind it all the Downs climb toward Lancing Ring, and the flat farmland of the Adur Valley runs down to the water where the old medieval salt workings once were. It is a settled, low-slung, green-edged sort of place, more string of villages than proper city, and entirely comfortable being exactly that. The scenery does a great deal of the heavy lifting the architecture never troubled itself with.

The verdict is a full five out of five, and it is the easiest score on the page to defend. Whatever quarrels you might pick with Lancing, its surroundings are not among them. Sea one way, hills the other, green space at the end of nearly every road, and none of it more than a stroll from your door.
