Pulborough

The South Downs' waiting room, now with a supermarket·West Sussex·South East England

Pulborough has been somewhere people stop on the way to somewhere else since the Romans built a rest house across the river, one day's march from Chichester. Cattle drovers took over after that, watering the herd and moving on by morning, and the modern version works from the spare bedroom and never leaves at all. The heavy engineering works on London Road shut down and became a supermarket and a health centre, which is an honest account of what a Sussex village turns into once the work goes. The Arun was here first, and it still gets a say on where the garden ends.
