Billingshurst
Billingshurst is a town in every respect except the one its residents care about, which is being allowed to call it a village. The Romans laid Stane Street straight through it and the twentieth century bolted the A272 across the middle, so the classic local experience is queueing at the crossroads behind a horsebox. Trains run to Victoria one way and Bognor Regis the other, and the house prices were set by the Victoria end. Even the old signal box eventually got out, to a museum at Amberley, which is the most Billingshurst way to leave: slowly, and by rail.
