Southwater

Horsham's spare room, kept suspiciously tidy·West Sussex·South East England

Southwater spent a century baking bricks for Victoria Station and the London sewers, then retired and rebuilt itself as cul-de-sacs. The old clay pit is now a country park, easily the most dignified thing any village has done with a hole in the ground. The deal is a driveway, a school run that works, and Horsham close enough to handle anything resembling nightlife. Nobody moves to Southwater for surprises, and the village has the good manners never to offer any.
