Capel, Surrey

The village the A24 decided to go round·Surrey·South East England

Capel sits exactly halfway between Dorking and Horsham, which sounds like a compromise because it is one. Its railway station is named after Ockley, a village further away from it, and nobody in Capel has ever made a fuss about the credit. Most of the farms still carry the names of their early fourteenth-century tenants, so newcomers should allow roughly seven hundred years before the house stops being called after the people who had it before them.
