What are the schools like in Capel, Surrey?

For anyone buying or renting in Capel, Surrey.

Good, provided somebody in the house enjoys driving. Surrey's inspected schools are overwhelmingly rated well. Outstanding is common enough to be unremarkable. The local primaries on the list are infant schools. Secondary school starts with a car key. The quality holds up; the geography is where it gets more awkward.

Ofsted has given a published overall grade to 159 schools across Surrey, and 147 of them are rated good or better, which is almost all of them. Of those, 30 are outstanding and 117 good, against 7 that require improvement and 5 judged inadequate. These are county-wide counts, not a tally of Capel's own doorstep, so they describe the pool a family is fishing in rather than the school at the end of the lane. Another 194 settings hold no published grade yet and sit outside those figures entirely.

A named school near your house is not a promise of a place. Admissions run on the council's rules, and a house that looks close on the map can still sit on the wrong side of a line nobody printed in the listing. Check the admissions criteria for the specific school before the survey, not after the removal van. The 2019 Department for Transport modelling puts the nearest primary at about 10 minutes by car or 34 minutes on foot, and the nearest secondary at about 18 minutes by car, 69 minutes by public transport and 113 minutes on foot. Nobody's twelve-year-old is walking that.

The primaries in the local list tell their own story. Scott-Broadwood Church of England Infant School carries the name of the piano-making family whose money enlarged the village church in 1836, which makes it one of the few institutions in the parish that still bills a Broadwood. Newdigate Church of England Endowed Aided Infant School and St Michael's Church of England Aided Infant School complete the set, and all three are infant schools, so where a child goes at seven is a question to settle early rather than discover at the gate. For older children the list includes Leith Hill School, Unified Academy, St Teresa's School, RGS Surrey Hills and Hurtwood House School; which of them fits depends on age, admissions criteria and how much of the week you are prepared to spend in a car park.

Schools are one of Capel's real strengths: the surrounding county is full of well-graded options, and the only serious homework is the school run.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
