Cuckfield
Cuckfield's landowners saw off the railway in the 1840s, and the village has been quietly pleased with itself ever since. The line went to Haywards Heath instead, taking the growth and the commuter crush with it, and Cuckfield kept the coaching-inn high street and the look of a place that won the argument. The first known iguanodon fossils turned up just down the road, which feels right, because nothing here has been in any hurry to evolve since.
