Is Cuckfield a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Cuckfield.

Cuckfield is safe, and the main thing residents complain about is noise. Crime runs a little below the rest of Mid Sussex. Almost nobody is out of work. Anti-social behaviour is the one category above the national norm. This is a quiet area where the reports are mostly about disturbances, not danger.

Police recorded 544 crimes in the Cuckfield area in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate works out at about 58 crimes per 1,000 people, roughly 9% below the Mid Sussex average. That's lower than the surrounding district. The difference is modest, and the figure covers Cuckfield and the villages around it as one area.

For comparison, the Mid Sussex rate over the same year was about 63 per 1,000. Put the two figures side by side and the gap is small. Both numbers are low, and in a district this quiet the village and its neighbours sit close together.

The kind of place matters when you read those figures. The area averages about 1,050 people per square kilometre, which is roomy by town standards. Unemployment is about 1% and overcrowding about 2%. That's the profile of large homes and settled households, and the crime numbers look like what you'd expect in a place like that.

Violence and sexual offences are the largest category at 36% of recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That sounds alarming until you remember it's the biggest category nearly everywhere, and the statutory grouping includes common assault without injury. Locally it's in line with the national share, no more. The difference is anti-social behaviour, at 22% here against 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson make up 9% against 7%, other theft 8% against 7%, public order 7% against 7%, and drugs 4% against 4%. The overall picture looks like any other place, apart from a bit more nuisance behaviour.

Getting a suspect charged is a force-wide question, not a local one. Sussex Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 35th of 42 forces on that measure over the year to May 2026. Around 48% of cases are closed with no suspect identified. That's a figure for the whole force and says nothing about how safe Cuckfield is. It does tell you roughly how often a report ends in a charge, and here that isn't very often.

Safety is one of Cuckfield's strengths, with crime below a district that's already low. Anti-social behaviour is the category that runs above the national share, and the other categories sit close to it.
