Crawley Down

The High Weald's doorstep, carpeted in post-war cul-de-sacs·West Sussex·South East England

Crawley Down is not Crawley, and anyone who lives here will correct you before you've finished the sentence. In the nineteenth century it hosted illegal prizefights while the local law looked the other way because the crowds were good for trade, which remains the most entrepreneurial the village has ever been. Beeching took the station, the old line became a path for walkers and horse riders, and the car has done the commuting ever since.
