Forest Row

Ashdown Forest's gatehouse, priced like the manor·East Sussex·South East England

Forest Row was ranked Britain's third poshest village and has been working hard not to mention it ever since. The station closed in 1967 under the Beeching Axe, swung by a man who lived just up the road in East Grinstead, which is one way to keep the day-trippers out. Forty years later the village signed up as a Transition village, pledging to wean itself off oil with no railway left to wean onto. Ashdown Forest wraps round it on three sides, and most of the low-carbon future still arrives by car.
