Forest Row's schools are good, and for a village this size there's an unusually wide choice. The state primary is a short walk from most front doors. About four in five of the county's graded schools are rated good or better. Two independent schools sit on the village's doorstep. Secondary school is the part that needs a car.
For primary, Forest Row Church of England Primary School and Nursery is the one with the village's name on it, and the typical walk to a primary is about 18 minutes. St Mary the Virgin Church of England Primary School and St Michael's Primary School are also nearby. There are 2 mainstream state primaries in the area, and they averaged 104.5 in the Key Stage 2 maths test, a score every state primary in England reports on the same scale. That's two schools, not twenty, so one strong year or one weak one moves the average. Parents quoting it at the school gate should keep that in mind.
Ofsted's grades are counted across all of East Sussex, not just the village. Of the 67 schools with a published grade, 54 are good or better, about four in five. Seven are outstanding, seven require improvement and six are inadequate. The rest have no published grade yet and aren't counted either way. A county-wide figure says Forest Row is in a well-run county, not that every classroom within a short drive is excellent. Check the latest report for each school you're considering.
Having a school in the village doesn't guarantee a place in it. Admissions follow the council's rules and each school's own criteria. Buyers who assume the house comes with a place sometimes learn otherwise when the allocation letter arrives. Check the admission criteria before exchanging contracts, not after.
Secondary is where the car comes out. The typical journey is about 14 minutes by car, about 30 minutes by public transport, or a 70-minute walk that no teenager will do twice. There's no state secondary in the village itself, so every family here has a daily journey to plan.
The village's other schools are what make it unusual. Michael Hall School is a Steiner Waldorf school, teaching from kindergarten to 18 in the grounds of Kidbrooke Park. Greenfields School is an independent school taking children of all ages. Few villages have that much alternative education this close, and a certain kind of parent chooses Forest Row because of it. At least one nearby independent school has closed recently, so check that any school on an older listing is still open.
Schools are one of Forest Row's real strengths. The primary years are covered on foot, the county's schools are mostly good or better, and the independent choice is broader than most towns can match. The one catch is the drive to secondary.
