Is Forest Row a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Forest Row.

On paper, Forest Row is one of the least safe places in its district, and the paper matters. Its crime rate sits well above the Wealden average. Shoplifting takes a much bigger share than it does nationally. Violence takes a smaller share. A village this comfortable doesn't usually come with this crime rate, and buyers should know that before they see the view.

Forest Row recorded 596 crimes in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 93 per 1,000 residents. That puts the village about 67% above the average for the Wealden local authority. That's not a rounding error. For a village surrounded by heath, it's a big number, and anyone who assumed a village this expensive was automatically quiet should look at it before the survey.

The district rate over the same period was about 55 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Forest Row's 93. Wealden is a large, mostly rural district, and Forest Row's rate is well above it. Much of the district reports a lot less crime.

The village doesn't look like the kind of place that produces these numbers. The built-up area averages about 1,900 residents per square kilometre, which is dense for a village but a long way from a town centre. Unemployment is about 2% and about 3% of households are overcrowded. The usual signs of a struggling neighbourhood are absent. The number has to be read alongside what kind of crime it is.

The mix makes the rate easier to understand. Shoplifting made up about 35% of recorded crime, against about 8% across England and Wales, and that's the category driving the figure. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury and is the biggest category almost everywhere, accounted for about 22% here against about 35% nationally. Anti-social behaviour, at about 16%, matched the national share. Criminal damage and arson (about 7%) and other theft (about 6%) were close to their national shares too. Burglary was about 5% against about 4% nationally, slightly above the national share, and one to note if you're weighing up a house on a quiet lane. The high rate comes mostly from the tills, not the front doors, but a crime against a shop still counts as a crime.

After a report, the numbers don't get better. Sussex Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 35th of 42 forces. That's a force-wide figure covering the whole of Sussex, not a Forest Row statistic, and it measures whether offenders are caught, not how safe the village is. In about 48% of cases across the force, nobody is identified at all. If you want to know whether someone will be caught, that's the realistic answer.

Safety is Forest Row's weak spot. The rate is high for a village, and most of it comes from shoplifting rather than harm to residents. Buyers comparing it with the rest of Wealden should take the gap seriously.
