Edenbridge, Kent
Edenbridge grew up where a Roman road crossed a river, so the Romans planned for the traffic and nobody planned for the water. In 1968 a helicopter had to lift a man out of his flooded home, and local legend says he never noticed the water rising because he was glued to The Forsyte Saga, which is still the strongest review that series ever got. The flood defences have improved since, and the Eden keeps testing them anyway. People come for a medieval timber-framed high street on the border of Kent and Surrey, and they get one, along with a river that treats that same high street as its overflow car park.
