Sevenoaks

A stately home that let a town move in·Kent·South East England

Sevenoaks is a London salary that went home to Kent and never left. The town named itself after seven oaks, lost six in the Great Storm, watched vandals finish off the replacements planted in front of the Blue Peter crowd, and now has eight, which is the local instinct in a single tree line: overshoot the order and let the neighbours notice. At the top of the hill, the Sackvilles still live in the house Elizabeth I gave them while the National Trust handles the upkeep. Every buyer in town would sign that arrangement tomorrow.
