Is Sevenoaks a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Sevenoaks.

Yes, a little safer than the district around it. Recorded crime runs slightly under the local average. Violence makes up a smaller share of the total than it does nationally. Shoplifting is the one category that punches above its weight. In Sevenoaks, the asking price will take more off you than any thief.

Police.uk records 1,910 crimes in Sevenoaks between June 2025 and May 2026, giving a published rate of about 61 crimes per 1,000 residents over the year to May 2026. That sits roughly 6% below the average for the Sevenoaks district as a whole. It's a modest gap, not a dramatic one, and the honest reading is that Sevenoaks is an ordinary safe Kent town, not a sealed bubble.

Side by side, the district averages about 64 crimes per 1,000 residents against about 61 for the town. Three crimes per thousand is the kind of margin a local estate agent will call "one of the safest towns in Kent" and a statistician will call a rounding story. The truth is in between: slightly better than the district, and nowhere near the alarming end.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is settled and comfortable. The town averages about 3,150 people per square kilometre, which is suburban density, not inner-city crush. Unemployment is about 2% and overcrowding is about 2%. None of that settles the crime question on its own, but it describes a town of detached houses, commuter streets and a busy high street, and not much else.

The crime mix is where Sevenoaks looks least like the national picture, and even there only slightly. Violence and sexual offences make up about 32% of recorded crime here, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere and includes common assault without injury, so the local share being a few points below the national one counts in the town's favour. Anti-social behaviour is about 15% here and about 16% nationally, which is close enough to call level. The differences show up in property crime. Shoplifting is about 14% of the total against about 8% nationally, other theft about 9% against 7%, criminal damage and arson about 9% against 7%, and vehicle crime about 7% against 5%. A town with a busy retail centre and plenty of cars worth taking gets the crime that goes with them. Leave nothing on the back seat, and lock the car when you park at the station.

Then there's what happens after a report. Kent Police, the force covering Sevenoaks, charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks sixth of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. That is a force-wide figure, and it says nothing about Sevenoaks streets specifically; charging decisions are made across the county. It answers a different question from the crime rate. The less comfortable number is that about 36% of cases across the force closed with no suspect identified. If your bike vanishes from outside the house, the chance of seeing it charged is better in Kent than in most of the country, and still not good.

Safety is one of the town's strengths. Sevenoaks is a touch safer than its district, lighter on violence than the national mix, and a bit heavier on things going missing from shops and cars.
