East Grinstead

A commuter town that named a road after its grudge·West Sussex·South East England

East Grinstead is where Dr Beeching lived while his report turned the town's station into a dead end, and the town answered by building a relief road down one of the closed lines and naming it Beeching Way. Most places complain about a public servant. East Grinstead laid it in tarmac and put up signs. The A22 and the A264 then squeeze onto one stretch of single carriageway up to Felbridge, so "relief" is doing some hopeful work at rush hour, and the only other train out of the station is a preserved steam railway, which is about right for a town that holds a grudge that long.
