Lingfield, Surrey

A village with a racecourse and an empty jail·Surrey·South East England

Lingfield was promoted to small town around the time the railway arrived and has refused the job ever since. It keeps a medieval church in the middle, a racecourse on the edge, and a stone cage on the main street that last held a poacher and is still waiting for a worthy successor. The people it suits want Tudor beams outside the window and a train to Victoria within walking distance, and would rather not talk about how long that train takes.
