Is Crawley Down a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Crawley Down.

Yes, and by a margin that's hard to argue with. Crime runs about a third below the rest of the district. Unemployment is close to nil. Overcrowding barely registers. In Crawley Down the main thing to worry about is getting stuck behind a tractor.

In the year from June 2025 to May 2026, 265 crimes were recorded in Crawley Down, and the published rate works out at about 42 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 34% below the Mid Sussex average. It is a low figure for a village that sits between a large town and an international airport.

Put the two figures side by side and the gap is clear. Mid Sussex as a whole recorded about 63 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against about 42 in Crawley Down. Mid Sussex is not a rough district to begin with, so beating its average by a third takes some doing.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is settled and comfortable. The average population density across its statistical areas is about 2,822 people per square kilometre, which is suburban rather than urban. Unemployment is about 2% and overcrowding about 1%. None of that causes low crime on its own, but it describes a village of owner-occupied family houses with driveways, and not much that attracts trouble from outside.

The totals are low enough that a handful of incidents can move any category's share by several points, so the mix should be read loosely rather than as a settled fact about the place. With that caveat, violence and sexual offences made up about 35% of recorded crime, the same as the 35% national share. That category is the largest almost everywhere, and it includes common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour was about 29%, against 16% nationally, the one category that stands out. Public order offences were about 8%, against 7%. Other theft was about 8%, against 7%. Other crime was about 4%, against 2%. Shoplifting was about 3%, against 8%. When anti-social behaviour is the category that stands out, what most people are dealing with is a nuisance rather than a threat.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how safe the area is, and it is answered at force level rather than village level. Sussex Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the same year to May 2026. That ranks it 35th of 42 forces. In about 48% of the force's cases, no suspect is identified before the case closes. Crawley Down doesn't produce much crime, but when it does, the odds of anyone being charged are not good.

Safety is one of Crawley Down's real strengths. Crime is low even against a district that is already quiet, and very little of it is the sort that stops anyone walking home.
