Newick
Newick is a Sussex village that got most of its houses built after the war and has been quietly resisting the twenty-first century ever since. The medieval church sits half a mile from the actual village because the medieval villagers apparently couldn't be bothered to walk any closer, and the twentieth-century villagers apparently couldn't be bothered to build the houses near the church. There is an amateur dramatic society, a green with a memorial to King George the Fifth, and the kind of price tag that suggests everyone who moved here in the eighties has done extremely well out of doing nothing. If you want a village where the biggest news is the youth theatre's autumn production, this is the correct village.
