Haywards Heath

A railway halt that got ideas above its station·West Sussex·South East England

Haywards Heath exists because a railway needed somewhere to stop, and for about ten weeks in 1841 it was the end of the line to Brighton, a role the town has never quite stopped playing. It is where people land when they want a London salary and Brighton at the weekend and can't quite commit to either, and it has never once tried to talk them out of it. The last real fight here was on Muster Green in 1642; these days the bloodiest contest is for a seat on the morning train. The buyers who wanted wonky beams and a duck pond went to Lindfield, and they still get their post addressed to Haywards Heath.
