Sawbridgeworth

Tudor high street, post-war everything else·Hertfordshire·East of England

Sawbridgeworth took a thousand years of mumbling to turn a Saxon called Saebeorht into a town name, and for most of that time locals saved effort by calling it Sapsworth. The maltings that made it rich now sell antiques, which is about as Hertfordshire a retirement as a building can have. Anne Boleyn held an estate on the edge of town and the Beckhams moved in centuries later, so it has form with famous residents, though one of them left more abruptly than the others. The only local with a fixed annual engagement is a ghost who supposedly rides a white horse up the old carriage drive every first of November, and even he doesn't bother with the rest of the year.
