North Weald Bassett

Epping's back garden, with a motorway through it·Essex·East of England

North Weald Bassett used to be on the Tube, which is the sort of thing people keep mentioning at dinner long after it stopped being true. London Underground closed the line in 1994 and handed the station to volunteers. That leaves the village with a heritage railway, an airfield and a motorway through the middle of the parish, and it still gets to London by driving to Epping. In 1260 the lord of the manor dealt with the robbers in the local wood by asking the king if he could cut some of it down, which remains the most decisive bit of planning the place has ever had.
